Elements 10: Crop Overlays
Photoshop Elements 10 adds three “overlay” options for use with the Crop tool: Grid, the Rule of Thirds, and the Golden Ratio (also known as the Golden Mean). Here’s how to put them to work for you when you’re cropping your images.

Are we able to print the grids? That would be helpful in analyzing a photo for painting.

Unfortunately, no, Rachel. You could probably create a printable grid with guides fairly easily, though.

This is what I’ve been looking for, but I just upgraded to Elements 9; I don’t want to have to pay for an upgrade AGAIN. Is there any way to add these crop overlays to Elements 9?

I used the shape tool in photoshop elements 9. If you scroll through the options under the shape tool, there is a “grid” that used for the rule of thirds. Once drawn on, it can be resize and and moved around until it is positioned over your photo just like the overlay demonstrated in the video above. I then used the crop tool to crop allong the edges of that shape… it snapped right to it in fact. that is a couple of extra steps, but it worked for me every time!!
