Another good introduction to masking. Matt also has a reference to plug-ins, but this is over 5 years old and applies to Elements 3. What part of this video applies to PSE 7 or 8? I’ll hunt around for for videos and articles about useful plug-ins for PSE 8.

We had a Layer Mask add-on in the old days, but more people were using add-ons like Grant’s Tools, so we didn’t update it.

The current method (which has been the same since PSE5) – without using a plug-in/add-on – is to use an adjustment layer as a mask.

If you want an add-on, you can check Diana’s Getting in on the Action article (and related links), and Mike’s Boost Your Elements Experience with Plug-ins. They both deal with recent versions of Elements.
