There are a couple things to check:

      1) Make sure you have the current version of QuickTime installed from http://www.apple.com/quicktime. Please make sure virus and security software are disable during the installation.
      2) If you have the current version of QuickTime, take a look at your Preferences Panel for QuickTime. There may be some video card settings that are getting in the way of videos displaying. There should be some preferences listed regarding DirectDraw. Those being turned off may help.

Regarding the OK button. Dave is referring to the green check mark that is displayed as you recompose. There is also an okay button in the feather dialog box if you are using a selection.

      Regards,
      Cindy

Great and very informative, everyone should watch the tutorial before starting to actually learn pse. Also the instructor was the best I have seen so far.

I am new to learning layers. This tutorial was good on how to work with the different layers, but the part I do not understand is that your example looks like 4 different photos, how did you get each photo into a separate layer if they are not part of one photo? Maybe I haven’t learned enough about layers to ask this question and you may not understand my question, but if you do, I would appreciate an explanation. Thank You.

      Hi Shelia-

I think I understand. You’re asking how I got the smaller photos on to their own layer within the larger image? There are several ways to do this, but probably the easiest is to simply select an image, copy it, and then paste it into another image. The pasted image will automatically be placed on its own layer.

I hope that helps. If not, shoot me a private message on the forums (if you’ve never visited the forums, click the “Forums” link above with will take you to Elements Village. My user name there is mrod.

My question has to do with how you make different aspects of your photo into different layers? For instance can separate objects in the photo be identified by the user so that they can become separate layers?

        Jo,

The easiest way is to create a selection of what you want to be on a different layer, then press Ctrl-J (Mac: Command-J), which copies the selection to a different layer. Then, you can make changes to that layer’s object.

I can open and view videos, but cannot control (pause, start, rewind, etc.). Also, cannot view the entire screen, parts are cropped.

I thought he wasted to much time on different ways to do the same thing. Don’t cloud the issue. Other than that it was informative

Thanks for the feedback, Michael. In reviewing them, I tend to agree with you.

Newbie here. I wish I had found these LAYERS videos a month ago. I have been buried under layers of confusion to the point that I was about to give up. These are great learning tools.

    Thanks.

The firt time I saw this some time ago, I thought I wish he would not confuse me with all of the other options and shortcuts because I could not remember them all. Now that I am a LITTLE more familiar with the program, I went back and watched it again and picked up a lot of new shortcuts. Great tutorial.

Good presentation on the basics, but I need instruction on how to put the layer components together. Layers 1 & 2 does not cover it.

Hello your videos on layers (1) and (2) have a black mask surrounding the video window this on my screen obliterates the right hand side so only a fraction of the Layers pallette is visable which rather spoils the whole thing which is about use of layers also the commentary has a strange booming background echo as he speaks so not a good session can you advise me whats wrong is it my set -up or it is the video.
    Thank you johnquartz@ntlworld.com

Great tutorial, but the right hand side of the video is truncated so I cannot see the layers with their names etc. I am using Windows Vista but I have never had this problem before. Also I cannot pause the video and roll it back to hear a comment again. Any advice on how to eliminate these problems will be appreciated. Thanks.

having trouble viewing the video, have downloaded the latest version of quicktime, sometimes it is just a black screen with sound, sometimes the right side of the screen is cut off, or the few times it works the motion stops and the sound continues. It is very disappointing that the video doesn’t work the information could be very helpful. Is there anything else I should check? It seems like a lot of other people have the same problem. Any plans to fix this?

This video has cleared up alot of misunderstandings I have had about layers. I get the concept now and just need to practice. At first I was frustrated with PSE9 because I was learning pieces here and there, but now that I have subscribed, I’m starting at the beginning. It’s all starting to make sense now. I’m still a little confused on the mask concept when you used the black to show the bottom layer…please clarify again or direct me to a tutorial. Thanks

i just don’t understand why you don’t just work on one photo at a time instead of layering them.
