Something is wrong with your file for Kloskowski’s image, it is corrupt and won’t open even with winzip.

I think Jeff is correct – file would not open on my computer either

I unzipped the download, then imported the image to Photoshop. Everything works as advertised. I could get rid of the noise by brushing the sky in the Layer 2 mask. But Matt’s method is cleaner.

photo file looks fine to me, downloaded ok. But no instruction or lesson. Is it the magazine only?

What is the purpose of hiding the edge mask in step 6? I don’t see the snappiness you have in step 7.

It worked well for me. I can see this technique being useful when there is a lot of detail that needs sharpening along with areas – such as sky – that don’t.

I’m having the same problem as Jeff. The file appears to be corrupted.

I downloaded the sample file as Rick suggested on my iMac and it opened fine.

I tried it without using any masking for comparison, and the sharpening was a bit better (also the sky grain, of course) than when the mask was used. It seems that using the mask, somewhat higher sharpening settings are needed to achieve the same result. But very useful indeed!!!

Today, the file opened perfectly. Don’t think I did anything differently, but who knows!

The purpose of hiding the edge mask in step 6 is it is not going to be used as a layer. It was created to copy then paste later on in the tutorial step 9.

I had the same trouble downloading the file. Perhaps a few more instructions would have been helpful. After having to shut down the computer and about an hour of trial and error, I did get it to open. I followed along and honestly, I really couldn’t see an difference from the original and the edited photo. I did enjoy the lesson and repeated it again, hoping it will stay with me. I also downloaded the photos for “Composite Master Class” before I forgot how to do it. I hope I will remember next time, it was very frustrating

    Really dumb question:
I’m new to layers and new to version 9 of PSE. In step #9 of “Edge Sharpening Secrets”, it states: “If you’re new to Elements 9, click the Layer Mask Icon at the bottom of the layers panel…..”
Here’s where the dumb question comes in: where is the icon located – what does it look like?
BTW, I was able to download the sample photo w/out any issues onto my iMac desktop.
    Thanks!

Not a dumb question at all, John. It’s the second icon from the left in the bottom of the Layers panel. (see the attached screen shot).

It’s only clickable when you’re working with an unlocked layer.

A video on the Layer Mask feature can be found here – it might be helpful:
