Cutting Through Haze

By Liz Ness  ·  Issue: March/April 2011 (V8N2)

Low-contrast, hazy photos are the bane of every vacationer’s travel photos, but with a little bit of work, you can make those landscapes pop.

Very helpful. Later this year I’ll be in AZ and intend to visit the Grand Canyon. Knowing that I’ll be able to compensate for hazy photos, I’ll be more inclined to take certain photos which otherwise I might have eschewed. Monkey Grass (= Muchas Gracias) for your help.

The articles was very helpful as I am only coming to grips with managing layers.

I got a little stumped at Step 3. It states that: make sure the Foreground to Transpartent gradient is selected (it’s the second box on the top row). I could not find that.

I am using Version 9. Can someone help?

On the Layers palette, when you click on the “Black & White Cookie” icon and select “Gradient…”, a dialog box appears. At the top of that box, double-click on the colored area next to “Gradient:” and another dialog box (Gradient Editor) appears. It’s here that you can find your desired gradient option.

    Hi!
I guess I’m just not seeing it. How do I download the original so that I can follow along?
    Thanks, Alex

I love this tutorial. I have been doing some work on some photos I took of Canada last year. Some did come out looking like a 1950′s postcard though.

I am running PSE 9 and can’t seem to get the gradient fill mask to work properly. It won’t paint over the foreground details. I use PSE 7 on another computer in house and it works fine when I follow the steps in the article. Any chance something’s wrong with my PSE 9?
