I copied the woman’s image from the cheat sheet so I could follow along. I used earphones because the volume was too low and I didn’t want to miss anything. I’m not sure how the black paint brush on the adjustment mask hides any coloring I did. But I’ll practice some more and maybe I’ll get it. Great tutorial! (I made her eyes bluer.)

“Black conceals, white reveals” lol I am getting this burned into my memory. With masks if you paint it black, it will conceal the adjustment that the selected layer is trying to do (and white will reveal it). Maybe an easier way for you to see if is to take any image and choose: layer => new adj. layer =>hue/saturation. You will see your layer and a white box next to it which means when you change the hue or saturation, it will affect the whole picture. change the hue/saturation to make the difference easily visible and now choose b (for the brush regular brush tool, if you don’t get it right-click on the icon and choose it from the 4 choices). On the bottom left hand side you will see two boxes, click “D” so that one is black and one is white, click x until to get the black box on top and the white on the bottom. Now color away and you will see how the black bush will conceal the effect of the hue/saturation.

This was a great tutorial, nicely done. I picked up a few new tricks that I did not know before: (1) Alt-clicking with the lasso to remove a selection; (2) if you make an adj. layer while already having a selection chosen, PSE will automatically make the layer with the selection set as revealed. Thanks!

An alternate way of doing this is just to make an adj. layer (hue/sat) set to 100% black and then white out what you want to color.

    Good job Liz.
