Searching for Shadows

By Kelly  ·  August 17th, 2011

We’re just over halfway through our Shadow Photo Challenge for August, and I’m excited to see some great photos in the PET and Elements Village galleries. Remember, you have until August 31st to submit your image.

If you’re still looking for the right shot, here’s some inspiration from around the Web…

  • Smashing Magazine rounds up a showcase of 45 beautiful shadow photographs. I particularly love the one at the very end of shadows seen from the inside of a hot air balloon.
  • The cool kids at Photojojo offer 30 ideas for using shadows in interesting ways. There are lots of fun ideas in here to spark your imagination, including using translucent objects for colored shadows and shooting from interesting perspectives to make the shadow your main subject.
  • If you’re having trouble getting a great shot of shadows in the camera, you can try to create them after-the-fact in Elements. Corey Barker shows you how to turn the subject in your photo into a silhouette. (Although he’s using an older version of Elements, the steps will work for newer versions, too.)

If you want to be considered for the August Photo Challenge, please don’t forget to add the phrase “Shadow-Challenge” in the keywords field in Elements Village Gallery or in the Description field  for the PET Gallery.

Have Fun!

This is embarrassing, as I have been a long-time member, but must confess I have never used the galleries. There are two gallerioes menttioned, the Elements Village Gallery and the PET Gallery. Are they diiferent galleries? Is there a reference source describing how one posts to each? Where is the reference source?

Hi Clarke. There’s no reason to be embarrassed. It’s not entirely obvious. There are two different galleries you can use. We have one reserved just for subscribers (to use it, position your mouse over the Community button at the top of this page and choose P.E.T. Gallery from the menu that appears). There is also a gallery that is open to a larger community of Elements users through our forums (to use it, choose Elements Village from the same Community menu). We will check both galleries.

If you use the P.E.T. Gallery, please put the keyword “Shadow-Challenge” in the Description field. For the Elements Village gallery, please put it in the keywords field.

I hope that helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me at kelly@photoshopelementsuser.com
