Reflection Challenge: Top Picks

By Kelly  ·  November 15th, 2011

For the October P.E.T. Photo Challenge, we asked you to capture a reflected image—and what a treat it was to see what you came up with! You found reflections in  garden ornaments, audio equipment, and ceilings. Some were sweet, while others were solemn. Thank you to everyone who took the challenge! It wasn’t easy, but our judges bravely managed to come up with a list of 10 favorites. Here are this month’s top picks:

The abstract colors and grungy texture in Jacqueline Dalton’s photo beautifully evoke a rainy evening in the city.

We love the contrast between the building’s painterly, abstract reflection and the mundane window washer in Ken Summer’s photo.

The perfect stillness in the water and marbled, saturated tones of the reflected sky create an interesting and peaceful scene in Patricia Collison’s landscape shot.

The fact that the girl only exists as a reflection in this well-composed shot by Jeanette Crossley adds a dream-like quality.

The repetition of the girls’ white socks in Christell Faul’s photo beautifully echos the unifying spirit of being on a team.

Can you photograph infinity? This clever photo by Greg Weseman makes good use of a candle’s reflection in a dark room.

This striking photo by Debi Parry manages to be both serene and slightly ominous at the same time. The converging lines created by the trunk and branches produces a wonderful visual tension.

We love the colors in Clifton Jones’ mesmerizing photo and the way the reflection distorts to echo the car’s shape.

Sue Koons not only captures a great moment and a beautifully clear reflection, but also creates a wistful sense of nostalgia with the added border and  color toning.

The Winner:  This warm, inviting photo by Abraham Sayson makes us yearn to go inside and curl up with a cup of hot cider. The bold burst of red reflected in the wet street epitomizes autumn for us.

Congratulation to all our winners—and to everyone who shared their images with us! I hope you’ll join us again in our November Photo Challenge, which is going on now. The theme is “Motion.”

Impressive work from all the finalist. They prove there is more than one way to define a word, “reflection”. Congratulations to all.

Thanks so much for including my Teamwork in your choices. The volleyball team in photo just won LHSAA 2011 Dist. IV State Champions and were ranked #1 going into the play-off tournament playing the #2 team.

Thank you for choosing my very first download on this site. It is an honor to be among so many talented photographers. We were just in Tennessee visiting our daughter when I snapped the beautiful tree and it’s reflection. My five children were shocked when I told them my photo was chosen. (they are my best cheerleaders). Thanks for this avenue of sharing.

Tough to pick a winner from these. All outstanding. Some a result of skill; others possibly lucky to push the button at the right time. But the results are just as good.

I don’t mean this to be critical in any way at all. But I would like to make a comment. The winner of the Reflections Challenge was a great picture. No question there, however the challenge was reflections and I thought the reflection portion could have been better. There were much better representations of ‘a reflection’ in the other top picks. Just my opinion. TrisheBear

I agree with Patricia. submissions are always a guess, but the term reflection would hjave led me to expect that the reflection was a major part of the photo effect. the winner is a beautiful photo with a definate effect, but the reflection seems secondary.

Congrats to everyone who took the challenge, beautiful and creative work by everyone.

    Patricia and Grace,
One of the tough things about being a judge is that it’s such a subjective process. The winner for each challenge is determined by a vote from our panel of judges. There really were a lot of outstanding images this month.
