November/December extras online

By Rick LePage  ·  October 25th, 2011

The November/December 2011 issue of Photoshop Elements Techniques started mailing to subscribers this week, and we’ve posted the download and online links files for the issue on the magazine page here on the site.

The absolutely gorgeous cover image (click on the image to see it a bit larger) was taken by our friend Julie McLeod, a valued contributor in the Elements Village forums. (She’s also the creator of Julie’s Textures, which we posted a couple of months back.)

Regarding delivery times, the issue should be in most US mailboxes by November 11. Canadian subscribers should have their issues by November 18, and we anticipate complete delivery worldwide by November 25. We’ll post one of the articles later this week, and the PDF download will be available on Nov. 1.

Julie, congratulations. A beautiful picture. The subdueded saturation of colors fits well with this time of year. Also a compliment for the graphic designer, because the fonts combine nicely.

Thanks for the nice comments about the cover image. It was pleasure enough to know one of my images was well received by Rick and staff but to have it chosen for the cover is pretty darn exciting. And it gives me a needed bit of encouragement to forge ahead with my photography. Thank you!

I love the cover photo of this issue….even though the holiday season is fast approaching, you did not fall into the craziness of it all. Great picture.

      Hi Cindy,

Thanks! I’m glad you liked the image. I’m not sure which part of it you were interested in exactly so here is an explanation of what I did. After doing basic edits in Lightroom, I took the photo into Photoshop Elements to add some textures. Basically, the original background was a plain gold wall and it had some serious shadowing as a result of the lighting. I opened a couple texture files (at least one was from my own texture set which is available for free download here on the site and one was from Lost and Taken.) I placed these textures in layers over the image and changed the blend modes and opacities. Then, I used layer masks to brush the texture effect away from the part of the image I didn’t want covered. After that, I took the image back into Lightroom and added a preset from Sarah Ji called Cool Vintage. That is essentially a split tone preset which added sepia and gray tones to the image.

A good place to start for learning how to add texture to image is Elizabeth’s blog post, here:

In it, she gives basic instructions for adding textures and also provides links for downloading various textures, including the ones I mentioned above.

      Texturing is great fun….

Cindy, there is also a magazine tutorial on using textures in the March/April 2009 PET issue. You can download the PDF of the article here:

I agree… Julie’s texture treatment and other effects she added are perfect for her cover photo.
