Morning Challenge: Top Picks
For the September P.E.T. Photo Challenge, we asked you to get up early and grab your best morning shot. And boy, did you! In addition to a feast of sunrise shots from all over the globe, you treated us to glimpses of your morning meals, your commutes, your gardens, and your fishing holes. Thank you to everyone who participated in last month’s challenge! Here were our judges’ top picks:
We love the golden tones and the way the morning light hits the empty bench in this photo by Patricia Satkofsky.
Our eyes can’t help but follow the s-curve of the road into the distant fog in Joseph Stone‘s photo.

With the orange glow of the sun cutting through the haze and the thin streaks of light peeking through the barn’s slats, photographer Mike Raymond creates a striking silhouette.
The morning mist and muted colors add a wonderful painterly quality to this shot by James Thomas.
Steven Digirolamo offers a more personal take on the morning theme with a photo that looks good enough to eat. The photo makes great use of natural light—not to mention powdered sugar.
The viewing machine in the foreground serves as a nice anchor in this dramatic sunrise shot by Shannon Muller.
The long morning shadows in this image by Eleanor Abramson contrast nicely with the strong horizontal lines in the overhead structure. It’s hard to not feel a bit of anticipation with the arriving bus.
We love the impatience conveyed by John Berger‘s photo of tightly packed fishing boats waiting to get the day’s work started.
The cool tones and complete stillness in this photo by David Ryan seem to perfectly capture that crisp morning feeling.
The Winner: Tom Whipple does a beautiful job of framing the sunrise in his striking photo of Mesa Arch in Utah. The dramatic interplay between light and shadow emphasizes the vastness of the surrounding land while the strong rock formation keeps our attention focused.
Congratulations to everyone! I hope you’ll join us for the October Photo Challenge, which is going on now. The theme is “Reflections.” Best of luck!

WOW, beautiful shots. I would not be able to choose and would make them all winners. What a tough job that must have been. I think I need some breakfast now. LOL

To click on the names of the photographers is to discover how uttery difficult it must be to pick winners.
To cite just one example, each and every one of Mike Raymond’s images is stunning not to say breathtaking.
