Matt’s High-Key Effect & CoffeeShop Vintage Action

By Rick LePage  ·  July 9th, 2010

I just posted Matt’s latest video, “Fairy-Tale High-Key Photo Effect,” on the site. This tutorial shows you how to get this vintage-style, high-key effect quickly and simply by adjusting a few sliders inside the Camera Raw dialog box. (One of my attempts is below.)

We’ve talked about how great shooting in Raw can be, but as Matt notes in his video, you can easily edit JPG images (or other image formats) in Camera Raw: just choose File>Open As (or File>Open on the Mac), click on the photo you want to open, and then select Camera Raw from the Format pop-up. Dave did a video on this last year, “Using Camera Raw on JPEG Images

If you’ve want to find out more about editing Raw images, we have a dedicated topic page, called Using Camera Raw. If you want to understand the basics, I’d recommend Ben Long’s “What You Need to Know About Shooting in Raw,” and “Digging in With Camera Raw,” both of which were published in Photoshop Elements Techniques last year, and contain great general information.

And, if you like that old-time vintage look for some of your photos, check out one of may favorite Elements bloggers, Rita over at CoffeeShop. She’s a great source for Photoshop Elements actions–Diana wrote about CoffeeShop in her “Get in on the Action” article for the magazine last year–and tutorials. One of her recent pieces, Simply Vintage, is available both as an action and a tutorial, which is awesome, especially if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of installing an action.

Check it all out, and have a great weekend!

Rick
